GENERAL INFORMATION
Sarpy County Cooperative
Head Start serves income eligible children and families in Sarpy
County, Nebraska. The county covers an area of 238 square miles and is
located in the eastern part of the state, south of Omaha, Nebraska. It
is the state's only true suburban county. Sarpy County is unique in
Nebraska for its rate of growth. The county's population is now over
123,000, an increase of more than 19.5% from its 1990 level of 102,583.
With this tremendous growth pattern, Sarpy County has transpired as the
third most populated county in the state of Nebraska and contains the
third largest city, Bellevue, in the state. The boundaries that
surround it make Sarpy County an identifiable community. Sarpy County
also contains the four school districts of Bellevue, Papillion/La
Vista, Gretna and South Sarpy District #46. These four schools
districts applied for a Head Start Grant in 1992 and later formed a
School Cooperative under the Interlocal Cooperation Act of the State of
Nebraska and currently serve as grantee for the program.
When Head Start opened its doors in 1992, the program
served 57 children at two sites. Head Start enrollment continued to
expand until the program reached its current enrollment of 125 children
ages 3-5. These children are served at four sites. Families are offered
both part day/part year and full day/full year services according to
their needs. Children who need transportation are transported by our
four school buses.
